The brand's name, derived from the Venetian 'massa alto' meaning 'the highest,' reflects its commitment to excellence. Initially, under the design direction of Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Maxalto focused on revisiting classical styles using traditional woodworking techniques, resulting in sculptural pieces like the Africa chair from the Artona collection.

In 1993, Antonio Citterio took over as the sole designer, steering the brand towards a 'modern neo-classic' aesthetic. This approach blends contemporary design with classical influences, drawing inspiration from early 20th-century and French interwar styles. Citterio's vision has been instrumental in evolving Maxalto's identity, ensuring its collections remain timeless yet modern.
